Traduire les étiquettes produit : décrypter les ingrédients d'un sérum visage (peptides, acides et autres actifs)

Translating product labels: deciphering the ingredients of a face serum (peptides, acids and other active ingredients)

Facial serums have become an integral part of many beauty routines. Yet, when you turn over a bottle to read the label, you can be faced with a long list of complex ingredients, often difficult to understand. Peptides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, plant oil, chemical components… How can you make sense of it all? And above all, how can you know what you're actually applying to your skin?

In this article, Energiqa helps you decipher labels and better understand the composition of the cosmetic products you use.

Why is it important to read the labels on beauty products?

Reading beauty product labels is an essential habit for taking care of your health and skin, and for making informed choices. It allows you to:

  • Know precisely what ingredients are present in the product.
  • Avoid certain allergenic or irritating components.
  • Check for the presence of truly beneficial natural or organic ingredients.
  • Distinguishing marketing promises from the reality of the composition.

Reading a label, therefore, means taking back control of your beauty routine.

What are the first ingredients to check on a cosmetic label?

The INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) list follows a precise order: the ingredients are classified in descending order of concentration.

Here are the elements to identify first:

  • Water (aqua), often the first ingredient in a serum.
  • The active ingredients (peptides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide …) present in the first 5 lines.
  • Vegetable oils, natural extracts or ingredients derived from plants.
  • Preservatives and chemical components are at the end of the list, often present in small quantities.

Example: A serum claiming to have a vitamin C formula, but listing ascorbic acid at the end of the label, probably contains very little of it.

How to identify harmful ingredients in cosmetics?

Not all chemical ingredients are harmful. However, some are controversial or not very respectful of the skin's natural balance:

  • Parabens: preservatives suspected of being endocrine disruptors.
  • Silicones (e.g., dimethicone): smooth the skin but can be occlusive.
  • Sulfates (e.g., sodium laureth sulfate): irritants for sensitive skin.
  • Synthetic perfumes (perfume, fragrance): potentially allergenic.
  • PEG, PPG, EDTA: chemical components with poor biodegradability.

If you are looking for a more natural and respectful product, opt for organic cosmetics or those with transparent formulas based on plant-based components.

Focus on peptides: an anti-aging ingredient you should know about

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as cellular messengers. They have become essential components in anti-aging skincare due to their numerous benefits:

  • They stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.
  • They strengthen the skin barrier.
  • They reduce wrinkles and improve elasticity.

On labels, they are often identified by names such as “palmitoyl pentapeptide”, “acetyl hexapeptide” or “copper peptide”.

Hyaluronic acid: an essential natural moisturizer

Naturally present in our body, hyaluronic acid is a hydrating molecule capable of retaining up to 1000 times its weight in water.

When incorporated into facial serums, it allows you to:

  • Hydrate deeply.
  • To plump the skin.
  • Smooth out wrinkles and fine lines.

You can find several shapes on a label:

  • Sodium hyaluronate: very common, well absorbed by the skin.
  • Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid: penetrates deeper.
  • Hyaluronic acid: more general, less specific.

Combined with a vegetable oil, its effect is even more lasting.

Niacinamide, retinol, vitamin C: essential active ingredients

Certain ingredients have proven their worth and deserve a prominent place in your routine:

  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3): improves skin texture, regulates sebum, reduces pores.
  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid): a powerful antioxidant, it brightens the complexion and stimulates collagen.
  • Retinol: effective against the signs of aging, it accelerates cell renewal.

These ingredients are cornerstones of many modern facial serum formulations.

What apps can help decipher cosmetic labels?

Several tools exist to help you easily decipher a composition:

  • INCI Beauty
  • Yuka (cosmetics tab)
  • Clean Beauty
  • QuelCosmetic (UFC Que Choisir)

Simply scan the barcode or enter the component name to obtain clear information and an analysis of the product formula.

Natural, plant-based, organic: what are the differences on a label?

The terms “natural”, “plant-based” or “organic” do not mean the same thing:

  • Natural: refers to an ingredient derived from nature, but not necessarily free from chemical processing.
  • Plant-based: refers to an ingredient extracted from a plant.
  • Organic: implies cultivation without pesticides or GMOs, and a product often certified by a label (Ecocert, Cosmebio, etc.).

Vigilance is still required: a brand can use the word “natural” even if its composition contains very few plant-derived ingredients.

Example of a decoded label

Let's take a concrete example:

Aqua, Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Niacinamide, Caprylyl Glycol, Parfum, Dimethicone, Tocopherol, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1

Analysis :

  • Aqua, Glycerin: aqueous base and moisturizing agent.
  • Sodium Hyaluronate: hyaluronic acid, for hydration.
  • Niacinamide: vitamin B3, for sebum regulation and radiance.
  • Perfume, Dimethicone: synthetic perfume and silicone.
  • Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1: firming peptide.

A formula that contains interesting active ingredients, but also some components to consider depending on your skin sensitivity.

Reading a label is a conscious way to take care of yourself.

Understanding the label of a cosmetic product is essential for your skin, your health, and your well-being. It allows you to choose skincare products that align with your needs, beliefs, and lifestyle.
